This is a quick-start for configuring a Raspberry Pi to work with an Internet Labs D-Star DVAP Dongle and run it 'headless' aka without a keyboard/mouse/monitor.
My current Pi Hardware configuration:
1. Raspberry Pi Version B and power supply.
2. Edimax Nano Wi-Fi (USB) adapter.
3. 8 Gb SDHC.
4. D-Star DVAP Dongle, 2 Meter version.
Pi Software Configuration:
1. Raspbian Wheezy 2013-02-09
2. TightVNCServer
Mac OSX running RealVNC Client or Windows 7 Laptop running RealVNC Client.
I'm assuming the reader has a Raspberry Pi and a working knowledge of the hardware, software and operating Linux, the Raspberry Pi and the DVAP Dongle.
If you need details regarding the Raspberry Pi and operation http://learn.adafruit.com has some excellent tutorials to get you started from the board up.
First off you'll need to get the .img file downloaded from http://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads the version you need is Raspbian Wheezy 2013-02-09. Start that downloading. Load this on to your SD Card and boot up your RaspPi.
Running your Raspberry Pi 'headless'
If you're using a keyboard/monitor/mouse and would like to run without, or 'headless' you can start here,
(If you want to Skip ahead and setup the DVAP drop down a few lines)
http://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-raspberry-pi-lesson-7-remote-control-with-vnc/overview
Step through this tutorial to install TightVNCServer on the Raspberry Pi.
Before you unplug
You will need a network connection to the RaspPi to, and it will need to be setup prior to disconnecting the keyboard/monitor/mouse, this is particularly important if you're using Wi-Fi on the RaspPi.
If you are connecting to your Pi via Ethernet or Wi-Fi and it's connected to a router, you can use the VNC Client to connect to and manage the Pi once you have TightVNCServer installed.
Get your Client
There are several VNC clients available online, I chose RealVNC from www.realvnc.com they offer a free license (Windows and Mac OSX), without support or encryption, that you can use to remote to the Pi and easily manage the desktop GUI.
I use a Mac to connect/control/update my Raspberry Pi so all of the commands listed in the install steps can be cut and pasted into Mac OSX terminal.
If you are connecting to the Raspberry Pi with a Windows OS most seem to use Putty or another SSH terminal emulator to run headless.
Install DVAPTool on the Pi
Follow the steps below to install/run DVAPTool on the Pi

1) Make sure you are running Raspbian Wheezy 2013-02-09 and are connected to the Internet with your Pi.
2) Open an LXTerminal window and run:
"sudo apt-get install qt4-dev-tools". Answer "Y" when prompted.
3) In terminal window run:
"curl -O http://opendstar.org/tools/DVAPTool-1.04-rpi.tgz"

4) In terminal window run "sudo tar xzPf DVAPTool-1.04-rpi.tgz"

5) In terminal window run DVAPTool with "./DVAPTool" from your home directory.

Note from Robin aa4rc:
Note that this is a full GUI version. I'm working on a text only daemon.
There are no current plans to compile DVAPTool for any distribution other than Raspbian. It may or may not work on others.
Getting your DVAP Dongle to talk to the Pi
The DVAP Install steps were provided by Robin aa4rc, basically he has us installing tools for runtime, connecting to and pulling the DVAP .tgz file, then unpacking it into a directory and from there you can execute DVAPTool from the Pi Desktop GUI.
startx and get your GUI up if you're running keyboard/monitor/mouse or VNC to the Pi and get the GUI up there.
At this point you need to configure DVAPTool with the usual’s, Callsign, Frequency etc. Connect your DVAP, it make cause the Pi to reboot.
I've seen some of this behavior when hot-plugging USB devices into the Pi, particularly USB thumb drives.
Test your Pi/DVAP it should be able to connect to the D-Star Network.
Auto starting the DVAP Dongle when you boot your RaspPi
Ed kb6tho, has provided a method for starting DVAPTool when the Pi boots up and opens the DVAP Port, it's important that you have it configured prior, because this will enable you to run the Pi 'headless' essentially connecting the DVAP to the Pi and plugging in the power and having it ready to receive commands from your radio.
It also assumes you have a functioning Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection on the Pi.
It may not be the most artful, but this works here...
Add the following to the "rc.local" file (in /etc)
# Start X Server so DVAPTool can start...
su pi -c startx
Create the following ".xinitrc" file in /home/pi and make it executable (chmod 755 .xinitrc)
#!/bin/sh
#.xinitrc
# Start DVAPTool
exec /home/pi/Desktop/DVAPTool -open
This starts an xserver session at boot and then runs DVAPTool and "opens" it so you are ready to connect via RF.
As soon as you see the blue LED light up, you can key up to connect…
Notes and ramblings
I have my Pi setup to connect via Ethernet (at Home) via Wi-Fi if I'm using my Verizon MiFi and needless to say I get better throughput on the home router.
This essentially makes a D-Star DVAP Hotspot of sorts that can be powered with my Trent Power 11000mAh USB battery pack, coupled with my Verizon MiFi Hotspot and it's battery power, I have a fairly portable unit provided I have 3G or better service on the MiFi, the D-Star audio isn't too bad.
I'm also working on D-Rats on the same Pi as well as Citadel Mail/BBS server, I'm trying to find the point at which the Pi will saturate and the right mix of applications to run on one Raspberry Pi.
I'm available to answer questions and will do my best with my limited knowledge of Linux, I'm learning as I go. I've found a wealth of information online and in Google and yahoo groups.

The modern soldier is different. He has been fed, bathed,
clothed, transported, warmed and cared for by numerous devices since birth; and

On the modern battlefield, commandos can show up as far as
behind the front lines as a ground-hugging squadron of helicopters can fly, and
the “The kindly art of taking Prisoners” is a chapter not found in most
commando training manuals.

Remember, the German Blitz in 1939 was slowed only by the
allied troops who could not run fast enough to clear out of the way; and while
English-speaking armies historically have treated their POW’s with kindness and
fair play, most other armies see prisoners as sources of information, slave
labor or unwanted burdens on the food supply. Thus, POW life is often torturous

In establishing a position, he must be willing to search and
secure the area carefully; bunker, camouflage and conceal like a crafty spider,
setting up fields of fire, claymores, trip flares, webs of wire, rattle cans

vigilant guard duty even when he is dead tired.

Most attacks come between the hours of midnight and 07:00,
on holidays and weekends. Chemical attacks are most effective between
04:00-08:00 and 16:00-20:00 because wind and sunlight are less effective during
those times. Most people are eating, showering, toileting, dressing/undressing,

And, whatever you can carry in
your backpack with your regular stuff, is all good.

Why? Say your position is overrun
at night, and you get separated from your unit. At sunrise, the war has swept
by, and the nearest friendlies are two days walk from your position.

You’re hungry…you see a goat. You
shoot it right? And bring every unfriendly in the area upon your position.

Maybe you can kill it with your
teeth like a tiger?

Knives and trenching tools are for
people with short teeth.

String or line is for building
snares, deadfalls or poncho lean-tos.

Matches are for people who don’t
like raw food. An extra canteen means soup water.

Shoe polish and extra toilet paper
is for starting fires under damp conditions. A beard of long hair can kill you
with typhus carrying lice. Scissors, razors and soap are your best weapons
then.

If your clothing is torn, or you
receive a gash in your leg while evading, a sewing kit can mend either.

If you get captured, you may have
to bribe your captors for food or water, or even your life.

Money, watches and other items of
value may give you an advantage with civilians or soldiers. War has created
plenty of those stories from Bataan to Hanoi.

Common Sense, that’s all it boils
down to, we all must apply common sense. At the same time, we can’t expect
someone else, or modern electrical appliance to do our surviving for us. Don’t
expect Uncle Sam to teach you everything, he simply doesn’t have the time or
the resources. You’ve got to adopt the attitude that you can survive anything
from flood, fire, earthquake, assault, chemical attack, plane crash or nuclear
attack. Somebody always does, so it just as well be you.

Make a survivor out of yourself;
practice, plan and prepare. Thumb through a Boy Scout manual for some survival
ideas and learn them.

Learn to cook without a microwave
or gas range. Take a first aid course. Study manuals on building and concealing
bunkers.

Learn a language, put survival
items in caches available to you. Become a good shot with a rifle, pistol, bow,
slingshot, knife, rock or anything that might help you secure a meal in the
wild. Survival hikes with local clubs available in your area might work for
some; hunting trips, camping trips or an NRA course might work better for
others.

Maintain physical fitness, you can
go longer without food, water and rest if you are in better physical shape. The
self-discipline of exercise will give you the “never quit” “can do” attitude
that can save your life.

If you don’t do anything, then I
refer you back to the myths above. The may be of some comfort to you, at least
until the siren sounds or until you hear sappers trying to work through your
“barbed wire” at 03:00 on some cold February morning.

While returning to Salt Lake City from San Francisco we discovered the flight was delayed by about 30 minutes a tool call ed TripIt alerted me while enroute to SFO that the flight was delayed.

This gave us time to divert and find a local eatery to obtain breakfast before venturing into the abyss of SFO and it's foul food offerings wrapped in cellophane.

Arriving at the airport we leisurely checked in bags and slowly made our way through the TSA Theater offering screenings of our nether regions.

Later discovering that a popular amenity offered us by American Express Membership, the Delta Sky Club, at this airport was in fact offered on the side of the TSA checkpoint that we were now not on. Yes, there is no Air Side Delta Sky Club at SFO Domestic Terminal. Shit.

We had some time to kill and took advantage of the one amenity Delta has seen fit to install in the terminal, the charging stations offered for 120VAC and USB devices.

Handy, but poorly designed requiring one to either sit on the floor next to the station or, in the standard airport seating with cords strung across your lap and getting cozy with your seat mate.

Perhaps an effort to prepare you for Delta's economy seating, now requiring your knees to be up under your chin during flight, unless you can and wish to pay for an Economy Plus seat (or you have no legs,) extorting more fees from your ever dwindling wallet.

The real story begins as we push from the gate in our Boeing 737-800 relatively new compared to some aircraft in Delta's fleet, this particular aircraft exhibited problems with the Inflight Entertainment system used to provide the Safety Briefing, otherwise known as bullshit theater, most can now recite this liturgy of rules and procedures, so many airlines, including Delta have turned this "important" task to the video screen which still manages to captivate the eyeballs of the traveling masses, combine it with clever annunciation, flashy graphics and cheeky flight actor/attendants, not in your flight, and people will watch it.

The resorted to providing a "manual" demonstration resplendent with the attempt at commentary from the rear of the cabin. It was also made more urgent by the proximity of the gate to the departure runway, very short in terms of distance. So much so that the "senior" flight attendant dispatched to the position near the over-wing exits barely had time to return to her seat before we began our take-off roll.

Combine that with the shrug and rather annoyed looking rolling-of-eyes at having to trudge down the aisle with the customary stage props and provide us with a "manual" demonstration, made her presentation both absurd and humorous. Clearly, crews on these Boeing 737-800's are relying on the Inflight Entertainment System so much so that when faced with the inability of the system to function for the all important briefing, they didn't fair any better.

Nevertheless, we made it to Salt Lake City, safely, with this story to tell.

Perhaps having a hard copy, and contingency plan to provide the briefing would be a low tech solution to dealing with an FAA required briefing to ensure the crew can follow the rules that we all know too well, or maybe the passengers should just read the safety information card in the seat back pocket. Assuming of course…we can read.

I opted for a slightly different route, venturing into the jaws of traffic on State Street near 7800 south and found most motorist tolerant of my form of transport. It is important not to dilly dally though as multiple construction zones made for congestion that was not for the faint of heart, although the benefit was that traffic was slowed by these zones and seemed to heighten people's sense of awareness. A decent commute at infinity mpg.

- Posted using BlogPress from my iPad

Location:Sandy, UT
Kelvin Andersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00579037791067605579noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10544771.post-41516216712287757792012-08-10T11:44:00.001-06:002012-08-10T11:44:35.923-06:00Cycling to work, the commute with craziesSo I picked a pretty decent morning, with cool temps outside, to ride to work. After having gathered my various gadgets and cycling gear I set out from home to make the 20 mile, or so, trek.

I discovered that people that are early risers seem to be a bit more courteous around cyclists. Granted 80% of my ride consists of a trail running the length of the Salt Lake Valley, making it a better ride while not interfacing with motorists.
One must use caution on the trail because it is shared with pedestrians and generally they're unaware of cyclists until well past. Many pedestrians a outfitted with headphones and the customary MP3 player and are executing their own morning rituals. This calls for a wide berth to be given as well as a slower speed on the trail.

The trip was without event until exiting the trail and setting out on the last 2 miles of the commute to the office. In West Valley motorists are much less tolerant and courteous with cyclists. In fact some are outright belligerent. For this I am scoring my ride today as a "1 Finger Commute." He deserved it, maneuvering his company vehicle too close to me, 3 feet is the Law in Utah but far be it for Utah Motorists to obey any laws that's just silly. So, I made sure he knew he was "Number One" with me, and yes he saw it because he returned the salute.

The afternoon commute score will be posted later, stay tuned...

- Posted using BlogPress from my iPad

Location:Lake Park Blvd,West Valley City,United States
Kelvin Andersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00579037791067605579noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10544771.post-44754733011034362532012-06-22T10:09:00.001-06:002012-06-22T10:09:39.482-06:00Bird of a featherMissed a great chance to snap some photos of pelicans this morning on the way to work. Over time I've joined many that are generally along the lines of technology and business continuity.

One general association is LinkedIn.com it's a great resource and sort mugs for a professional CV of sorts. Lately though, I've been getting 'invitations' to connect from folks with partial profiles, no picture, part of a name or just a first name.

What hell is that all about?

I found the movie slow, pedantic and a little bizarre. Sort of a Cowboys & Aliens meets the Red Planet with the Evil Sith thrown into a jar of fingerpaint.

I'm glad we only paid for the early matinee, it wasn't the best movie I've seen and it wasn't what I expected but I didn't really know what to expect.

Kind of a yawner.

Delta Airlines half assed a return flight home with absolute poor service, rearranging seating assignments and generally exuding the sense that they (Delta) just simply doesn't give a shit anymore.

After a late half-assed arrival at SLC an inflight entertainment system that didn't work, thank god for iPads, and a four hour flight stuck near the shitter, the service went from halfassed to Full-assed with lousy service from Park&Jet causing me to announce this will be the last time I do business with them.
Poor shuttle service, long wait times, and an $80 bill...no more Park&Jet. I can park in the airport lot or get a shuttle and probably get the same halfassery for less $$.

Fuck you Delta Airlines and a big hairy asses Fuck You to Park and Jet of Salt Lake City.

Your service Sucks!

Bless your hearts.
Kelvin Andersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00579037791067605579noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10544771.post-74648589106557730262011-06-21T23:08:00.000-06:002011-06-21T23:08:53.570-06:00Ragnar Wasatch Back 2011What a blast! It seems progress has been made and it feels pretty good with strength training and some swimming I'm showing improved mobility.
I don't beep when I go through the airport security checkpoints, a good thing. Explaining implants to the neanderthals at the TSA would be a challenge.
I think he's nuts, but Orem is a relatively safe city. His posts are entertaining to read. I think I'll find him a bicycle lock...
A climb involving roughly 3000 feet in vertical gain and a distance of about 12 miles one way.

Motivated by getting off the couch for part of the day and to see if I could actually perform the goal I set out taking my time so I didn't blast through the first 4 miles.

The climb is quite something, 2 dead skunks and really dead deer and about a half dozen squashed squirrels all providing motivation to move further up the canyon, I didn't quite think I was going to make it. I thought about turning around at Tanners Flat and again at White Pine but then I spotted the Tram at Snowbird and figured what the hell, I'm almost there.

Climbing (and gagging my way upward) I made it to entry #2 and made a brisk downhill run into the parking lot and noted most of the people who had passed me on the way up. I hit the general store for some fuel and replenishment, other than the gels and water I was carrying and stopped to sit and enjoy the cooler temps at 8000 feet.
As always the best part of a climb is the descent, a quick return detouring at Wasatch Resort for some downhill on a favorite trail and shortly after I was home.

I did it.Kelvin Andersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00579037791067605579noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10544771.post-47735735774476280852010-06-26T09:24:00.000-06:002010-06-26T09:24:14.692-06:00Mobility returns..I started physical therapy yesterday, and the new shoulder wasn't feeing to well halfway into it. I thought I was doing pretty well until the Therapist had me on the table and was working to get things loosened up. Nevertheless, the artificial joint seems to be working well and I'm happy to be rid of the chronic pain. A post-therapy ice pack helped considerably and i was perfectly willing to let them leave it on. I felt pretty good, well enough to break out my mountain bike and try for a short ride. That went well, although I could sense my arm and shoulder becoming tired. I've got a ways to go, but I couldn't be happier.
I need to log a few miles in my running shoes today...after some breakfast and cartoons.Kelvin Andersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00579037791067605579noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10544771.post-19163656962183666332010-05-25T18:48:00.000-06:002010-05-25T18:48:20.584-06:00Run First...then surgery.Oh ya...I finished the Ogden Marathon...15 May 2010.
26.2 is nothing compared to total joint replacement surgery!Kelvin Andersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00579037791067605579noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10544771.post-70222552911232452762010-05-25T18:46:00.000-06:002010-05-25T18:46:18.799-06:00We have the technology, we can rebuild him....New shoulder is in, 6 days post-op and managed thru my dressing change, which involved separating me from a large quantity or surgical tape. Immobilization is the key and left handed typing is a considerable challenge, since my right arm is tied up in a sling. Waves of muscle spasms are punctuated with, now occasional dull pain. Next week I get to see my Surgeons' work in the form of an xray. Should be fun to see what a new artificial joint looks like. For now, this is enough left handed pecking, next hurdle back to work tomorrow.....Kelvin Andersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00579037791067605579noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10544771.post-71092956791910466612010-03-26T22:15:00.000-06:002010-03-26T22:15:32.032-06:00Training continuesThe Ogden Marathon is approaching fast, the training continues, the focus is tough to maintain. I've done 13.1 miles, but I'm wondering how 26.2 will be to run. Mind numbing or exciting? A struggle or triumph?
I'm looking forward to it. Long run day tomorrow, shooting for 20 miles according to the training plan. I just need to pick and plan the route. Ready, set, go...Kelvin Andersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00579037791067605579noreply@blogger.com0
